RE-POINTING & CHEMICAL CLEANING

Method:
When excavating the bed joints we use 5" angle grinders , fitted with 6 mm diamond blades, connected to a DUST extraction unit which gives you a clean cut on the face of the brickwork to the top and bottom of the joint ready for new mortar to be applied. Before you apply new mortar to brickwork it must be wet down using a spray applicator to wash away any existing dust and to give you a surface to key to.

Excavating the bed joint:
It is common practice to take old mortar out to a depths of 18 mm to 20 mm unless otherwise instructed.

Applying your new mortar:
The new mortar is to be applied manually using the necessary hand tools.
We apply vertical joints commonly using a 4" pointing trowel. The horizontal bed joints using a pointing tray and small tool. This is a skilled application.
When performing a weather struck profile you must use a Frenchman (the Frenchman is a knife shaped tool witch hooks over at the tip).

What should your new mortar consist of ?
The new mortar is 2.1.1 (2 parts soft sand to 1 part sharp sand and 1 part hydraulic lime ( Standard practice on old properties with lime mortar joint)and 6.1.1 (6 parts sand to 1 part cement 1 part hydrated lime (standard practice on sand and cement built properties)

Brick & Stone Cleaning
When you clean brickwork or stone, or driveways it is most common for people to use a high powered pressure washer (jet wash), but in the majority of cases high pressured water on its own will not do a satisfactory job.
If this is a problem for you then why not give us a call and let us see whether we can be of help to you. We use TFR (traffic film remover) as well as pressure washers to help us achieve better finishes. If TFR is not successful then the only option then is to use a mild form of Hydrofluoric acid that will be applied in stages until the brick or stone work is clean. This process may take several coatings until restoration is completed.
